I am tired of hearing “YOLO”, which I have come to find out means “You only live once.” I believe that the concept of having one life to live and living it to the fullest is, indeed, a good idea; however, the manner in which people are taking this idea is completely idiotic. People are saying this before doing one of the following:
1. Something completely stupid and reckless that could get them hurt or killed.
If you are saying that you only live once, why in the world would you want to do something that jeopardizes your life? When did the concept become “I only have one life, so I may as well see how many times I can cheat death before he finally catches me, thus soiling and possibly drastically shortening this one chance I have.”? This truly is the mark of human stupidity.
2. Something that is idiotic, but not necessarily dangerous.
Some man took a picture of himself in a bra, thinking that it would be humorous, and tagged it with “YOLO”. That is so incredibly unremarkable that it makes me want to get a job as an accountant just so I can bore myself into thinking it was moderately amusing. At least the people doing the dangerous things might have stories to tell. All you have is that stupid picture you took of yourself wearing a bra. Which, let me tell you, will not be very funny to talk about for very long.
It will also probably invalidate anything interesting you manage to do because you will always be remembered as that one guy that put a bra on and posted it on the internet.
3. Getting wasted and going partying.
Yes, you only live once. That sounds like a completely valid reason to go out and do something that will cause you to forget everything. You also get the added bonus of several possible sexually transmitted diseases and hangovers. The fun thing is that you can get those more than once. Maybe that will more than make up for that one life you wasted. No one will remember you, not even yourself.
That being said, I think the only proper usage for the phrase “you only live once” should be reserved for people who make a difference in the world by doing or creating something truly amazing. Instead of making it an excuse for poor, immature behavior, it should be a reason for striving to do good in the world.
I really wish people would stop being idiots.
